On February 20th, the Bristol Huskies had a strong showing at the ForeKick's Winter Break Tournament in Norfolk, MA. The Huskies lost an impressive Championship game to Norton United 2-1.
Defense led the way as the Huskies ended pool play undefeated - with two shutouts. The Huskies defeated Walpole 1-0 in their first game. Goalie Samantha Tyler and defensive rotation of Caleigh Duffy, Kaitlyn Costa, Lexi Winnes, Alex Pires and Madeline Lombardo held off the Walpole attack. Kaitlyn Costa scored the lone goal of the game on a blast from just outside the goalie box.
In their second game, the Huskies defeated North Soccer Club (NSC) 3-0. Goalie Madeline Lombardo and the defense, this time with Carlie Rochefort and Hannah Klein rotating on defense, extended the shutout streak to 40 minutes. Samantha Tyler scored the first goal of the game. Olivia Cairrao made the score 2-0 by putting away a rebound from a shot by Chrissy Conley. Lexi Winnes scored the final goal of the game.
The Huskies faced NSC again in the Semi-finals and Chrissy Conley became an assist-machine. The defense, led by Lexi Winnes, Kaitlyn Costa and Alex Pires and goalies Hannah Klein and Madeline Lombardo held NSC in check as the Huskies mounted a controlled offensive attack. Olivia Cairrao netted the first goal with an assist from Chrissy within two minutes. Lexi Winnes scored the second goal with an assist from Chrissy. Olivia scored her second goal on a play started by Caleigh Duffy. Caleigh made a pass out of trouble from the left side to Chrissy, who found Olivia open in front of the net. The final Huskie goal was again set up by Chrissy, who centered the ball to Olivia. This time Olivia dished the ball off to Carlie Rochefort who drilled the ball into the net. The Huskies went on to win 4-1.
The Huskies faced Norton United in the Finals immediately after their semi-final win. The Huskies jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by Chrissy Conley. Goalie Hannah Klein and the defense played great and the Huskies took the 1-0 lead into halftime. Norton scored the equalizer about halfway through the second half. An exhausted Huskie team battled hard to keep the score even, but Norton was able to score the game winner with less than a minute remaining in regulation.
The Bristol Huskies showed great determination and effort against some very strong teams in Massachusetts that make ForeKicks their Indoor home. The Huskies adjusted well to the larger field and the faster turf, but the back-to-back playoff games took their toll. While they ended up on the losing end, the team was proud of themselves for their effort. They battled every second and left it all out on the field.
