On Saturday, June 7, 2008 the Bristol U-12 Girls Anchor Division Team, the Bristol Colts, played for the Rhode Island Youth Super Liga Championship. To get to the championship game, the Colts finished in first place in the North Division with a 6-1-1 record. They played the South Division Winners, <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />SouthCounty. Although the game time was 6:30 at night, it was still a sweltering day that the girls knew theyd have to stay focused through to bring home the championship. The girls had many supporters from other Bristol teams that took the drive to Smithfield just to see them play.

This was a game that kept all of the fans on the edges of their seats with both teams heading towards the goal numerous times, but with neither team scoring in the first half of the game. The second half surprised everyone, with SouthCounty coming down the field and scoring in the first thirty seconds of the half. Bristol had numerous opportunities to score, but either the goalie saved the ball, or the girls were unable to get the shot off and into the net. Destinee DeSousa, who was playing her first game of this season in goal, had the game of her life, stopping everything that came her way. Finally, with about ten minutes left in the second half, Sofia Cabral had her opportunity; she cut around the last defender in the box to send the ball into the upper left-hand corner, and tie up the game. Regulation time ended with a one-to-one tied game.
The Bristol Colts came into overtime ready to take the championship home. It was a battle between both teams, leading all of the fans to wonder what the Penalty Kicks would bring. However, Kaelyn Silveira saw her chance with about two minutes left in overtime. She was able to take a quick shot, one that no one will ever forget, and score the go-ahead goal for Bristol. After that goal, the Colts were able to hold off SouthCounty by not allowing the opposing team into their zone, leading to Bristols victory.
The girls celebrated by soaking Coach John with water after the game, which was both refreshing and shocking for him! Everyone is still wondering how Coach Jim was able to get away without getting wet we suspect the girls are saving his turn for the Rhode Island Cup! Great job, Bristol Colts and good luck at the Rhode Island Cup!
