On Saturday, June 13, 2009 the Bristol U-12 Girls Anchor Division Team, the Bristol Colts, played for the Rhode Island Youth Super Liga Championship. To get to the championship game, the Colts finished in first place in the Central Division with an 8-0-0 record. The game did not start out well for the Colts as they fell into unfamiliar territory by trailing 20 within the first 15 minutes of play. The Colts had not trailed by more than a 1-0 margin all season. The first goal was scored on a penalty kick by the WFF. This was not done without the great effort of the Bristol goalie. Kellsie Mitchell made the initial save on the PK and the WFF player was able to put her own rebound into the back of the net. The WFF team was able to grab the momentum at this time and quickly made it 2-0 and left the Colts in shock at this time.
The Colts did not give up as they knew that it was early and for the remainder of the half the offense would carry the play. They would eventually take the lead 3-2 before the half ended with three goals scored by Melanie DaSilva. The second goal was also scored on a penalty kick that was created by Taylor Perrys great effort to the opposing goal led to her being taken down in the box leading to the foul and PK. The offensive attack this game was led by DaSilva, Perry, Mitchell, Catherine Lopes, Sofia Cabral, and Ali Personeus.
The second half started with the Colts controlling play once again. The defense did not allow the WFF team many chances which attributed to the Colts attack. The Defense in this game was led by Madison Beck, Victoria Sousa, Destinee DeSousa, Sam Hogan, Katie Costa and Personeus as well. Destinee DeSousa also played goal in the second half.
The Colts were able to take a 4-2 lead midway into the second half on a great individual effort by Catherine Lopes as she was able to fire a bad angle shot into the far corner past the WFF goalkeeper. The WFF team did not give up and scored once again with approximately 5 minutes left in the game to bring it to 4-3. The Colts would be able to hold on and win the RI Youth Super Liga U12 Girls Championship for the second consecutive year. Congratulations to all the girls for their great effort all season.
